Rhythms and musical styles in Latin Jazz

This series explores the variety of rhythms and musical styles found in Latin Jazz.
Latin Jazz is a product of Afro-Cuban music and American jazz, however today , through its evolution it has changed, embracing a diversity of rhythms from Latin America; the Afro-Cuban traditions of Cuba, Afro-Rican from Puerto Rico, Afro-Brazilian from Brazil, Afro-Peruvian from Peru, Tango from Argentina and Flamenco from Spain, developing into a defined genre with a Pan-Americana flavor.
This series of Latin Perspective will explore the myriad of rhythms, musical styles and forms found in this Pan Americana projection of Latin Jazz music of today.

LATIN JAZZ PLAYS JAZZ

Latin Jazz musicians are unique with having something to offer to both jazz and latin jazz audiences.
Not only are they educated, and well versed in the harmonic and rhythm structures that revolve from the Afro-Latin clave and beat, but also in the voicings, harmonic structures and subsitutions of jazz.  Many of the Latin Jazz musicians have undeniably encountered the music of the Jazz legends which have inspired them to record their compositions, tastefully adding a Latin flavor to their music while honoring their legacy and providing a new and unique perspective to their classic recordings.

After the initial Cubop  /Latin Jazz explosion in the late 40's the music continued to flourish within the Jazz community. Stylistic interchange became the rule as Jazz giants examined the complex  crosspatterns layed over a Latin Beat and the harmonically static montuno vamps. This series highlights the music and the musicians who participated in its historical development.
